Joe Hesse - Varsity Head Coach - Coach Joe Hesse enters his 25th year of teaching PE and head coaching the Varsity Girls Volleyball program at Gilbert High School. He has a career record of 736-259 and has led the GHS girls to 15 consecutive region titles, 11 Final Four appearances, and 3 state championships. He also has coached club volleyball for the past 22 years.

Coach Hesse played volleyball for ASU from 1993-95. He graduated from Arizona State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and has a Master's degree in Education.

Matt Gutierrez - Varsity Assistant Coach - Coach Matt Gutierrez has been coaching girls' volleyball for 17 seasons. This is his fifth year assisting Coach Hesse with the varsity program. Coach Gutz previously coached the freshman team and had an excellent winning record there. He will also be heading into his 12th season as the head varsity baseball coach.

Coach Gutz received his Bachelors and Masters degree from Northern Arizona University and he is a Spanish instructor at Gilbert High School. Matt married his wife Holly 16 years ago and they have two children, Natalia and Antonio.

Patti Schoenhardt - Junior Varsity Head Coach - Coach Patti Schoenhardt has coached volleyball for 25 years now. It all began as a collegiate player for Saint Louis University where she played for SLU for 4 years on an athletic scholarship and was named Co-Captain her senior year. While a student-athlete Patti began her coaching career assisting the St. Louis Volleyball Club 18’s team.

Upon Patti’s return home (Tempe, AZ), she coached club volleyball for Arizona Juniors and eventually made her way back to her home club, Arizona East Valley Juniors (coaching 10’s – 18’s), and retiring from club coaching in 2021. Patti has coached at Mesquite Junior High School (8th grade team), Mesquite High School (Junior Varsity), and for four years as the Girls’ Varsity Head Coach at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School. Patti led her Seton Sentinels to three region titles and state playoffs all four years. Patti also had the opportunity to coach Seton’s first inaugural beach season Spring 2019. Patti joined GHS Girls’ Volleyball Program fall of 2019 as the Junior Varsity Head Coach under Varsity Coach, Joe Hesse.

Patti graduated from SLU with a Bachelor’s in Communication. She currently works at Nationwide, “is on your side” as a Consultant with the Office of Corporate Citizenship. Patti married her high school sweetheart, Brett, and they have three children, Noah (23), Preston (22), and Mckenzie (17 and a senior at Gilbert High School).

Coach Holly Gutierrez - Head Coach Freshman Team - Holly is excited to be a part of the coaching staff at Gilbert High School with Volleyball. Gilbert High has been a part of her life for over 25 years and her family has grown up in the gym & baseball fields. She opened Skyline High School Girls & Boys Volleyball Programs, coached many years of club volleyball and is now glad to be back in the gym coaching.

Coach Nat Gutierrez - Assistant Coach Freshman Team - Natalia is a Gilbert High School Graduate and volleyball alumni. This will be her first coaching experience and she hopes to learn a lot from the other coaches and athletes. Coach Nat is proud to be back in the gym representing GHS Volleyball!
